The TxDOT Yoakum District Design Office is currently hiring a Design Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician I) based in Yoakum, Texas.
As a Design Technician, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of roadway and bridge projects across the 11 counties served by the Yoakum District. Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

• Performs basic design work
• Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complexassignments.
• Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
• Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
• Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

• Licenses and Certifications:
• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

• Basic Roadway Design

• Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures 
• Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
• Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments 
• Performing basic design and drafting
• Training in a classroom, office, or field environment 
• Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
• Follow verbal and written instructions

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:

• No effective weather protection
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
• Subject to noise
• Subject to vibration
• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
• Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling 
• Standing-prolonged periods of time
• Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
