At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.

We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.

We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.

What To Expect

As an Advanced Hardware Electronics Engineer (BMS) at Vertical Aerospace, you will play a key role in the design, integration, and validation of our Battery Management System (BMS) hardware for next-generation eVTOL aircraft.

You’ll work within a multidisciplinary engineering team to design and deliver robust, safety-critical electronic systems for high-voltage battery applications. This role combines technical design, testing, and systems integration with close collaboration across engineering functions and suppliers.

What You’Ll Do

  • Support the creation and maintenance of BMS hardware design specifications for in-house projects.
  • Design digital and analogue electronics for high-voltage battery systems.
  • Develop BMS schematics, select components, and generate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Conduct hands-on testing and debugging of hardware designs.
  • Support the integration of BMS hardware within the high-voltage electrical system.
  • Coordinate with external development partners and contractors when required.
  • Participate in aircraft integration and validation, supporting colleagues and contributing to design reviews for BMS hardware, including DFMEA, FTA, and FMECA activities.
  • Identify and track assignments and deliverables, providing regular assessments of progress and outcomes.

What You’Ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics, Electrical, Electronics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with Battery Management Systems and power electronics, including power converters.
  • Proven ability in schematic and PCB design, including digital and analogue circuit design, PCB layout, and design verification.
  • Understanding of EMC principles and PCB design rules for compliance with standards.
  • Experience with FMEA, DFMEA, and single-component failure analysis.
  • Experience with requirements management processes and tools.
  • Fluent in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

    Desirable

  • Familiarity with functional safety and certification standards, including
  • DO-254, ARP 4754, ARP 4761, and DO-160
  • IEC 61508 or related standards
  • High-voltage training and experience in advanced battery design and development
  • Experience in hardware development for aerospace or automotive applications
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, SPI, I²C, and ARINC
