The Department of Conversation & Recreation (DCR) is steward of one of the largest state parks systems in the country. Its 450,000 acres is made up of forests, parks, greenways, historic sites and landscapes, seashores, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and watersheds. Position Summary:
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Long-Term Seasonal Plumber & Steamfitter II.
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
Troubleshoots plumbing problems in DCR facilities and takes required actions to remedy situation. Repairs/replaces plumbing issues such as bathrooms, pumps, water supplies, drains, etc; cleans sewers. Consults with contractors, utility companies and other trades personnel. All work is performed under Massachusetts codes.
Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general direction, the Plumber and Steamfitter II:
- Supervising and installing, repairing, maintaining, and/or altering steam and plumbing systems, sanitary fixtures, sprinkler systems, heating units, steam tables etc by operating power tools, sewer cleaning machines, hand tools and plumbing equipment
- Packing joints, valves and pumps
- Cutting and threading pipes
- Caulking and packing lead joints, valves and pumps
- Replacing seals in water closets
· Cleaning Filters
- Unplugging sinks, toilets and drains
- Use statewide e-portal to apply for plumbing permits
- Insulating heat tracing wires and/or piping to ensure that equipment is in proper working order and to meet agency needs.
- Scheduling installation, maintenance and/or repair work conferring with Regional Directors, district managers and other department personnel to determine location of equipment and appropriate time to complete the project.
- Determining stock and material needed for assignments and orders same.
- Properly completing work orders and submits in a timely fashion.
- Performing related duties such as erecting scaffolding, riggings and/or ladders; laying out drop cloths; fabricating metal products; sharpening and tempering various tools; cleaning tools and equipment, preparing work reports and training employees on the job.
- Performing other related work as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- General knowledge of all trades including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, and masonry
- Ability to safely and properly work with hand and power tools
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, instructions or layouts to understand construction work to be done.
- Experience estimating length of time, cost of materials and manpower needed using current market rates and man-hour output to develop a work project budget.
- Experience supervising assigned staff including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the project and assessing capabilities of personnel and available resources.
- Ability to handle complaints regarding assigned work and takes appropriate corrective action.
Preferred License And/Or Certifications:
- Current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Jobs may require additional training such as confined space, ladder safety, hazardous materials
- Mass. Plumbing License, Journeyman or Master Plumbers is required

Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. Qualifications
- First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
- Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in plumbing and steamfitting.
- Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Plumber's license issued by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters.
