Purpose of the Role
BGIS is seeking a dedicated HVAC Technician to support mechanical and HVAC services at a nationally significant, heritage-listed precinct in Canberra 🏛️, along with associated storage facilities nearby.
Working closely with a senior mechanical technician and the wider BGIS team, this role provides hands-on support across planned maintenance, fault rectification, inspections, and system checks. The position contributes to safe, compliant, and reliable asset operation while offering valuable exposure to a complex commercial and heritage environment (including areas not always accessible to the public).
The ideal candidate enjoys learning, values teamwork, and takes pride in contributing to places of cultural importance through thoughtful and reliable technical work.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planned and reactive maintenance of HVAC and mechanical systems, including split systems, package units, AHUs and FCUs
- Support ventilation, filtration, exhaust, and pressurisation systems maintenance
- Assemble, install, test, and maintain heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment
- Diagnose basic mechanical and electrical faults within licence scope, escalating complex issues as required
- Assist with inspections and routine servicing of chilled water systems and associated plant
- Support first-level monitoring and basic fault identification of Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Complete work orders, service reports, and asset records accurately within the CMMS
- Work in accordance with BGIS procedures, WHS requirements, and heritage controls
- Support specialist subcontractors during planned or reactive works as directed
Education, Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Mechanical or HVAC Technician role (all levels encouraged to apply)
- Experience supporting maintenance and repair of commercial HVAC systems
- Trade qualification in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
- Current ARCtick Refrigerant Handling Licence
- Restricted Electrical Licence (or willingness to obtain)
- White Card (Construction Induction)
- Current Driver’s Licence
- Australian Citizenship or eligibility to work on Commonwealth sites
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to work
Desirable:
- Experience in government, heritage, or public-facing facilities
- Exposure to broader building services environments
- Basic familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Certificate IV in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
- Additional safety training (e.g. Working at Heights, Confined Space)

This role is full-time and on-site at a secure operational location in Campbell, ACT, offering free on-site parking and convenient access to public transport. A vehicle is provided to support work-related travel.
