Engineering Manager

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience in software development and technical leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with distributed systems.
• Experience with programming languages (e.g., Java, Go, Node, Python) and databases such as GoogleSQL, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
• Ability to work effectively across boundaries in a distributed team environment.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

The Spanner Client and Connectivity team builds the bridge between the world’s most advanced distributed database and the developer community. We own the critical surface area of Cloud Spanner — the client libraries, drivers, and ecosystem tools that thousands of customers rely on every day.

Our mandate is to deliver a seamless and developer friendly experience across Java, Go, Python, and Node.js, while ensuring high performance and reliability. A key focus area is enhancing PostgreSQL compatibility to meet developers where they are. We are also responsible for the connectivity layer, including ORM integrations (e.g., Hibernate, SQLAlchemy, Django) and standard drivers (JDBC, R2DBC).

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
• Define the technical roadmap and oversee the end-to-end execution of Cloud Spanner client libraries to ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
• Advocate for ease of use by enhancing PostgreSQL compatibility, documentation, and open-source contributions (e.g., drivers, ORMs (Object-Relational Mappers)) to drive adoption.
• Ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of connectivity components while guiding architectural decisions and engineering best practices.
