The Legal Assistant supports the company by triaging calls and queries to the Legal Department, assessing potential legal matters and serving as a gatekeeper to Legal Department. This position interacts extensively with other Benchmark departments, managers of the company’s senior living communities, various contractors, outside counsel, and other third parties.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities:

• Oversees the templates of all residency agreements for the company’s Assisted Living Residences, Nursing Homes and CCRCs.
• Updates and maintains Disclosure Statements for CCRCs and ALRs, as required under regulations or if other changes arise.
• Responds to queries regarding requests for copies of medical records. Reviews records for any privileged information and accuracy.
• Assists in-house counsel with development of training tools and resources on legal topics, as well as conducts training on various topics (for example, basics of Residency Agreements, HIPAA, and other compliance matters). • Prepares and maintains contract templates between company entities and frequently used vendors and third parties.
• Assists with transaction due diligence, as needed.
• Works with attorneys and outside counsel to assist with lawsuits and subpoenas, by managing document production and other discovery matters.
• Oversees logistics for legal holds related to potential and actual litigation.
• Performs administrative duties and support in maintaining/updating the litigation tracking tool and claim files.
• Monitors communications with corporate registered agent and update filings.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Licensure/Certification:
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience working in a legal office or with regulatory agencies.

Required Skills/Abilities:
• Demonstrates computer literacy and familiarity with a variety of office software, including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation software including Excel, Adobe, SharePoint and Microsoft Word.
• Must be a self-starter who is also willing to take on more responsibility as requested, and be able to interact on a frequent basis with multiple disciplines across the organization.
