The System Administrator is responsible for working within the System and Server Engineering (SSE)Team to develop, implement, secure, and automate the management of enterprise VM, cloud-based compute, and storage services in virtual and cloud-based enterprise environments. This role reports to the Manager of Systems and Services and is guided by the SSE Technical Leads, while working collaboratively with other teams to contribute to the success of the Enterprise Technology & Service’s goals and University System of New Hampshire’s initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities

Collaborates with the SSE Technical Leads to manage and support all enterprise virtual machines, cloud-based compute, storage resources, and related infrastructure. (40%)

  • Assist with developing strategies to automate lifecycle management processes that streamline overall operations to meet customers’ needs.

  • Ensure proper security controls are in place, are monitored, and are both reportable and auditable.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to the customer and participate in planning meetings as necessary to support the application lifecycle.

  • In coordination with the Technical Leads, provide technical guidance to the team in resolving complex issues and ensuring timely incident resolution.

  • Propose and implement accepted solutions to improve efficiency and productivity through automation of processes and workflows.

  • Contribute to the development of the team skillset, tools, processes, and standards.

  • Ensures the design of the virtual machine and cloud-based compute and storage infrastructure is documented, scalable, reliable, optimized, secure, repeatable, reportable, and auditable.

  • Plans backup and recovery operations to ensure resiliency and business continuity in a disaster recovery scenario.

Collaborate with the SSE Tech Leads and team to design, define, implement, and maintain virtual and cloud hosted application service delivery stacks. (30%)

  • Assist the technical leads in developing strategies to effectively manage, update, and automate processes that streamline operational work tasks to better meet our customer’s needs.

  • Ensure the design of the virtual machine and cloud compute and storage infrastructure is documented, scalable, reliable, optimized, secure, repeatable, reportable, and auditable.

  • Plan backup and recovery operations to ensure business continuity and resiliency in a disaster recovery scenario.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to the customer and participate in planning meetings as necessary to support the application.

Adhering to CI/CD concepts, play a key role in managing, configuring, securing, and ensuring the constant delivery of service and ensure the quality of the lifecycle of virtual assets (e.g., virtual machines, services, and databases) in the USNH private and cloud-based environments. (25%)

  • Contribute to the automation and efficient management of VM and cloud-based resource provisioning and lifecycle.

  • Assist with the automation of monitoring service performance and resource utilization.

  • Support the implementation of AI tools and enhancements to improve IT automation processes and solutions.

  • Collaborate with other functional teams to ensure high availability, stability, scalability, and fault tolerance of all managed resources.

  • Assist with the creation, management, and curation of technical documentation.

General IT support (5%)

  • Provide after-hours coverage for time sensitive, scheduled, critical events, addressing production issues, or other changes

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and six years of experience in information technology field, Associate’s and eight years, or combination of education and experience equal to ten years

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience with Docker container technologies

  • Experience with Tomcat and related Java application service technologies

  • Experience with Salt and/or SCCM

  • Experience with GitLab or similar SCM solutions

  • Experience with scripting for CI/CD, DevOps, and general automation of processes

  • Experience with relational database technologies e.g. MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Azure SQL service, AWS Aurora

  • Experience managing enterprise server operating systems in virtualized and cloud-based enterprise environments

  • Experience managing virtual machines, containers, container orchestrators, and other similar cloud-based and containerized compute, storage, and networking services

  • Experience managing and supporting enterprise applications

  • Working knowledge of virtual machine patching and vulnerability remediation.

  • Experience with creating and maintaining both internal and user-facing documentation

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with scripting and/or programming languages, automation of tasks and processes

  • Windows and Unix file sharing

  • Great organizational and time management skills

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and within a team

  • Ability to work effectively while remote, including remote customer support

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in large Higher Education institutions

  • Certifications in cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure

  • Certifications in DevOps or CI/CD practices

  • Demonstrable education, certifications, or experience with site reliability engineering or service performance management

Compensation Pay Range:

$69,560.00 - $124,580.00
