Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Rapid Transit Finance Team is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to provide financially informed analytical support to assigned business units; understand the financial and accounting impact of business processes (e.g., audit, legal, and reporting requirements) to evaluate current and future business activities; help develop and implement financial processes for new business lines; perform financial analysis to support funding agreements with third party stakeholders and support the commercial and vendor management team in reviewing contracts, estimates and agreements from a financial perspective.
 

What will I be doing?
  • Provides financial and strategic analyses, reporting, and the necessary financial modelling with a focus on driving improved results in operational costing, budgeting, and forecast.
  • Develops commentary, memos, reports, and presentations on financial and accounting analyses for Senior Management and presents them to aid data-driven decision making.
  • Conducts financial analyses in support of business operations using proper accounting treatment, including reviewing month end close entries to ensure integrity of financial data.
  • Champions process improvement initiatives and evaluates the implications of new processes, systems, and projects from a financial perspective. 
  • Creates and applies reporting templates, financial models, and automated processes to meet legal and corporate standards, while meeting deadlines.
  • Builds relationships across all levels of the business with an ability to translate complex financial data into easy-to-understand messaging. 
  • Provides guidance and mentors other finance professionals on the team establishing policies and procedures for analysis and reporting and reviewing their work.
  • Provides finance forecasting and reports (e.g. variance and cost-recovery analysis, reconciliation of accounts), prepares entries, and takes corrective action.
  • Creates and applies reporting templates, financial models, and automated processes to meet legal and corporate standards, including meeting deadlines.
  • Monitors and maps assigned business processes, with particular attention to control and reporting functions; recommends immediate and longer-term changes to ensure the integrity of data and financial information. 
  • Review and analyze financial implications of contracts, including complex financial models, pricing, payment terms, and financial risks
  • Work closely with legal and commercial teams to ensure financial clauses are accurately reflected in new contracts. 
  • Perform analysis on third party funding agreements in development and report on financial status for implemented funding agreements.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Recognized professional accounting designation (i.e., CPA – CMA, CA, CGA) combined with progressive professional experience in business planning and financial management in a large public or private organization is an asset.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience as a financial analyst.
  • Experience with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards are an asset.
  • Experience in the application of the principles and practices of operating and capital budget formulation, analysis, evaluation and controls, financial planning/management processes, generally accepted budgeting principles and techniques, and financial systems.
  • Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis, and reporting; understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate current and future business activities (e.g., audit, legal, and reporting requirements).
  • Experience providing subject matter expertise to non-finance business leaders, partners and committee members, assisting in interpretation of financial data for decision-making and providing commentary.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget development, tracking, forecasting, business planning, and reporting, and conducting financial analysis related to resource allocation is an asset.
  • Proficiency with financial management systems and computer technology to develop and implement financial/accounting controls and procedures and implement and enhance systems.
  • Well-rounded experience with accounting systems, controls, and procedures
  • Extensive experience using MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) software tools.
  • Knowledge of enterprise-wide financial, human resources and budgeting system, preferably Hyperion.
  • Familiarity with MS Power BI or other dashboarding/reporting tools an asset. 
  • Highly developed interpersonal and excellent oral/written/presentation communication skills
