Position Summary...

The Senior Indirect Tax Manager provides advisory and consulting services cross-functionally to legal, merchants, real estate, sourcing, marketing etc. This position operates as the subject matter expert to ensure the end-to-end projects are executed with the consideration of the indirect tax implications. This position reviews the contracts to ensure the appropriate tax clauses are included or revised as appropriate and that the business implements the appropriate procedures to ensure tax implications are minimized.

In addition, this position leads the indirect tax audits, providing the Governments the requested information, explaining transactions, and proving the necessary analysis and documentation to support Walmart tax position taken.

The Senior Indirect Tax Manager is a sales tax subject matter expert who is expected to take the lead in all business initiatives ensuring the proper execution of indirect tax implications, ensuring the effective management of all Federal and Provincial tax audits, minimizing audit reassessments and ensure appropriate improvements are implemented to minimize future tax audit exposure.

  • Assess and provide recommendations to internal business groups on projects and new business initiatives to ensure compliance with the tax legislation and the minimization of indirect tax risks. Lead in business initiatives ensuring the proper execution of indirect tax implications. Provide recommendations to minimize sales tax exposure related to business processes.
  • Motivate, lead, and develop associates through performance management coaching, goal setting, and career development. Continuously assess and monitor talent development by identifying succession plans and challenging learning opportunities to foster professional growth to support the business. Ensure highly engaged associates that provide a high level of performance and customer service by building a team-based environment.
  • Assess and provide advisory support internally, related to system implementations and processes, to minimize sales tax audit issues, documentation requirements and input tax credit recovery processes.

Review and present recommendations for changes to policies, procedures and systems as needed to improve internal controls, integrity of the tax reporting and compliance process, and departmental efficiencies and streamline tax analysis for management. Leverage best practices to drive continuous improvement.
 

  • Partner with Legal and the business to support the business initiatives by providing advisory consulting services related to the Contract review process. Suggests and edits contracts to reflect the business transactions and minimize the corporations tax risk. This includes advice/recommendations, identification of sales tax issues and suggested contract edits or business structure changes to ensure compliance obligations are addressed appropriately and tax risks minimized.
  • Review Federal and Provincial budgets and disseminate relevant information and appropriate changes as required within the appropriate time frames. Determine the legislative impacts to Walmart, assess the business implications and determine the changes necessary for compliance.
  • Lead and manage the government tax audits and information requirements to be provided to the Canadian tax authorities. Negotiate audit proposals with Government Auditors as required. Oversee the Assessments and Notice of Objection filing as required. Minimize audit assessments and ensure appropriate improvements are implemented to minimize future audit exposures. Post audit procedural review and technical analysis.
  • Support the Director with various projects including acquisitions, divestitures, contract reviews, tax reserve reporting etc.
  • Have and maintain an in depth understanding of the tax legislation to manage and minimize the tax liability, highlight tax risks and opportunities for any change in legislation and new business initiatives. Review and manage all tax research based on current and proposed tax legislation, including tax memoranda and implementation recommendations related to the Excise Tax Act.

Qualifications
 

  • Experience with SAP - Finance specializing in Tax and S/4HANA.
  • Experience with tax technology software, solutions and integrations (Tax Engines).
  • Assist on all tax technology related projects including enhancements of SAP systems and Tax Engines.
  • Proven understanding of modern technologies and their applications in the business world and various industries.
  • Experience handling large volumes of data using Power Pivot/Power Query/Power BI is considered an asset.
  • Advanced excel capabilities to be able to handle large data volumes.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and teamwork skills, with the ability to manage conflicting demands and priorities and to multi-task.
  • Ability to lead a team ensuring high engagement and focus on deliverables.

  • Minimum Education Required Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum Years of Experience Required 6 - 8 years

The pay range for this position is $109,400.00 - $150,480.00. Pay will be determined based on relevant experience.
