The remote market in 2026 has four tiers. Most job boards only show the bottom two. If you want the top tier — Gitlab, Zapier, Doist, Automattic, Vercel-class — you have to go directly to their career pages and referral networks.

The four tiers

  • Tier 1: remote-native, global comp bands, transparent salary.
  • Tier 2: remote-friendly, US/EU bands only.
  • Tier 3: hybrid-pretending-to-be-remote, 2+ days in office.
  • Tier 4: outsourcing shops — low comp, high churn.

Where the tier-1 jobs live

Direct careers pages, Himalayas, Remote Rocketship, and internal referral networks. General job boards surface mostly tier 3 and 4.
